Daisy Flower flowers Kiambaa as Gatatha Primary shoots for the stars
Second last to the impending phase out of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) primary schools all over Kenya were in a race to finish the race and to finish it well.
Kenyan Government through the Ministry of Education is replacing the 8-4-4 system - by which the primary certification was the termination point in regards to the basic education - with the new CBC (Competency Based Curriculum) which follows a 2-6-3-3 education cycle.
So, ladies and gentlemen the following report enumerates how schools in Kiambaa sub-county performed in the particular exams and two schools will get a special mention; Daisy Flower School and Gatatha Primary School. Daisy School was the top performer in the sub-county this being their first KCPE while Gatatha Primary School achieved a remarkable feat by improving their grades significantly that enabled them to jump from the last position (number 55) in 2021 to number 43 this year (2022) with a positive gain of 30.26 points. Quite an achievement.
Before we delve into the full list, let us explore one question: What contributed to this exemplary performance in the two mentioned schools? Well, to get a substantive answer I made a courteous visit to the schools to understand what made them shine so that the other schools can borrow a leaf or two from them.
DAISY FLOWER SCHOOL – NUMBER 1 IN KIAMBAA KCPE 2022
The school, a private entity, is located in Gachie, Kihara ward in Kiambaa sub-county. Currently, it’s mainly drawing learners from Banana, Ruaka, Ndenderu, Wangige, Kitsuru amongst other places.
I had a sit down with the school’s headmaster, Mr. Bernard Tonny Maende, and I started by asking him the factors that he believes that made them to be ahead of the rest in regards to the KCPE of 2022 in Kiambaa.
Benchmarking – the school made a deliberate effort to benchmark itself with the highest performing schools we have in this country, they identify the loopholes that they find on the top performers and make sure that they work on these gaps in their school.
Boarding – it’s mandatory for the candidates to board in the school so that more time can be created between the learners and the tutors.
Discipline – discipline is highly regarded in the school.
Pupils’ right to play – they make sure that the learners gets ample time to participate in extra-curriculum activities e.g. Wednesdays from 11 – 1 pm and Fridays from 1pm – 2:30pm are specifically dedicated for swimming. Tuesdays are for cross-countries.
Good exposures – pupils get a chance to interact with their peers in other schools like Makini Schools, Ruaraka Academy, etc. in the regular academic debates and these opportunities provides a positive exposure to the learners.
Teaching staff – making sure that the teachers employed are Teachers' Service Commission (TSC) registered. After being employed, there’s a one month onboarding process whereby they are trained on how best to achieve the school’s objective – an internship kind process. Each teacher specializes in a particular subject.
Teachers’ welfare – salary are paid on time, appreciation tokens, provision of outside station allowances when they duties outside the school, etc. 90% of the teachers are housed by the school.
What about the challenges?
Parental engagement – parents are supposed to help their children with homework but they are instances some parents don’t.
School fees – some parents bring their children to the school so that their children can get quality education but can’t afford to sustain them in the school.
Logistical challenges – although they maintain their vehicles well there’s some inevitable mechanical breakdowns and other transportation challenges.
Gatatha Primary School – Splendid Performance in KCPE 2022
The public school is located in Gatatha area adjacent to the Gatatha Tea Factory in the Kiambu – Kawaida road in Cianda Ward, Kiambaa sub-county.
I got to interact with the school’s headtecher, Mr. David Maina Kamau, to divulge to me the secret behind the impressive performance.
Tusome programme that was being piloted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The programme focused on languages with an aim of fostering the reading culture to grade 1, 2, 3, learners. According to the platform website: Learning to read fluently in primary school is a critical foundational skill and one of the greatest predictors of academic success for a young student.
Motivated, energetic teaching staff and an embodying team spirit amongst them. The teachers also mentors the pupils.
English language has been adopted as the communications language in the school and adhering to the highest levels of discipline.
Reference materials for the leaners’ perusal are provided.
Issues currently bedeviling the school:
Low enrollement – the school is being under-utilized because they use to get learners from Gatono area and since a school was established at Gatono, the school population has been dwindling.
To arrest this situation, Mr. Maina is calling upon the area Member of Parliament, Hon. John Njuguna Wanjiku (Kawanjiku) who is the patron of the Kiambaa National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), to look into the following two options to address the issue:
Procure a bus that can be ferrying the learners form the nearby Kawaida village and in the process to ease the pressure that is currently being experienced at Kawaida Primary School due to excess learners at that school.
Make the school a boarding school by constructing a dormitory since it has space. By doing this, the school will attract learners from even far-away places.
Non-cooperation of the parents – low or non-cooperation of the parents towards their children learning and welfare.
