Jabali Preparatory and Kawaida Primary on a gaining spree as KCPE takes a final bow
After 38 year good years in the Kenyan primary education sector the Kenya Certificate of Education (KCPE) has called it a day. This is after the Government scrapped it in favor of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) which adopts the 2-6-6-3 education cycle, from the 8-4-4 system.
In Kiambaa sub-county, a total of 59 primary schools took part in the historic feat whereby a total of 3,684 pupils (1,874 boys and 1,810 girls) did the exams while a total of 18 pupils (6 boys and 12 girls) didn’t due to varying factors.
The sub-county achieved an overall mean score of 275.98 points a negative deviation (drop) of 6.67 points as contrasted with year 2022 where an overall mean score of 282.65 points had been realized. In terms of the subjects, following were the mean scores:
English – 60.33 points
Kiswahili – 55.76 points
Mathematics – 55.19 points
Science – 47.79 points
Social Studies – 56.92 points
In 2023, Daisy Flower School maintained the number one slot, for the second consecutive year while Jabali Preparatory School and Kawaida Primary School made significant gains in the final exams.
Let’s take a trip to Jabali Preparatory and Kawaida Primary schools to find out their winning formulas, shall we?
Jabali Preparatory School – Most Improved in KCPE 2023 in Kiambaa
The school which is a private entity located in Gacharage area, Ndenderu ward, Kiambaa sub-county improved their rankings by a whopping 64.61 points. By these results the school was able to leap frog from position 37 in year 2022 to position 11 in 2023. Spectacular.
According to the head-teacher, Mr. Paul Karanja, the impressive results were realized due to the following deliberate initiatives:
Regular meetings of the standard eight tutors whereby they analyzed on the progress in regards to the covering of the syllabus and coming up with remedial measures in places where lags are realized.
The teaching fraternity is well qualified and each teacher specializes on a particular subject. They also do co-teaching whereby you may find more than one teacher focusing on a same class in order to bring it to par with the other subjects.
The school also makes sure that the experiments that are required are done. This is coupled with weekly internal Continuous Assessments Tests (CATs) done to gauge the learners absorption of the academic content. The markings are done as a team by the teachers to identify the weak areas.
By second term, the syllabus was well covered and hence they utilized third term for revision purposes.
First lesson after lunch is dedicated for mentoring candidates and the senior classes by the tutors.
Challenges:
Poaching of their higher performers by other private schools.
Pupils’ dislike for the Swahili language.
Some of the learners missing school due to lack of school fees.
Kawaida Primary School – Most Improved Public School Kiambaa KCPE 2023
The school which is a public entity is located in Kawaida village, Cianda ward, Kiambaa sub-county.
The improved performance can be attributed to the following measures as stated by the school head-teacher, Madam Rosemary Mbugua, and her deputy Mr. Paul K. Karanja:
Pupils are self-driven and discipline is highly regarded. The support from the parents was realized. Motivation is done to the best performers by appreciating them with cakes and sodas and these influences the others to emulate them.
Internet Communication Technology (ICT) integration in the school whereby the school is internet enabled played a big role in the promising performance. They are grateful to the Kiambaa sub-county Education Office for the facilitation and support.
They also grouped the learners in four clusters of Class A, Class B, Class C, and Class D in terms of the performances with Class A being for the higher performers. By doing this, they were able to foster a positive competition amongst the pupils because each of them wants to be in the higher performers’ class. On their part, teachers were able to focus more on the average and lower performers.
Good infrastructure – the school walkway is well paved with concrete paved blocks popularly known as 'cabros' and construction of new classes courtesy of Kiambaa National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) by which the area Member of Parliament Hon. John Njuguna Wanjiku (Kawanjiku) is its’ patron.
Issues being experienced in the school:
High enrollment stretching the available facilities.
There was teachers’ shortfall in 2023 but it has been addressed.
Temporary/Unsecure fence – the fence poses a security risk to the school. Permanent perimeter wall will go a long way in securing the facility.
Facelift – the school need some sprucing up so as to make it more appealing. The school is calling upon for support in doing this from both the public and private sector. Companies around the area or outside can do this as part of their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSRs).
